Oakfield Golf & Country Club - Turf Grass

June Post
Warm temperatures have become more consistent over the past 10 days, with nighttime lows remaining in double digits. As a result, turf growth has increased significantly during this period. Overall, I am very pleased with the presentation and condition of the golf course. The greens are performing very well overall. Areas that experienced winter damage still have some thin spots, but I am encouraged by the steady progress being made. Targeted plugging and diligent overseeding

Mid May Blog
The rain has become a little tiresome. Brief stretches of nice weather have been bookended with rain events. Since our May 1st opening, we have accumulated 125mm rain (and counting, as it is raining as I prepared this entry, of course). With a typical May we would receive 85-100mm and we are not even halfway through the month, things are moving slowly. Whether it is the staff getting through edging the bunkers, progressing through our cultural practices, getting our herbicide

May Update
Oakfield has opened for another season, and like what seemingly has become tradition, the weather has been horrible. We had a beautiful Saturday for over 300 rounds, but surrounding that has been a lot of cold, wet, and windy weather that has kept play light. The greens have been making a lot of positive progress filling in thin areas. 10 Green April 26th. The front of the green sustained the most damaged of any other green or area May 4th. 9 Days after the previous picture T

One Week Out
We are another week closer to opening. The crew is very busy putting the course together in preparation of welcoming our members back for another season. A greens update: we put tarps back down on 1,2,6,10, and 18. The poa annua that took a bit of a hit is slow to recover as very cold nights this week have had turf growth at a standstill. A fertilizer application this week will help get things moving; but it should be noted that fertilizer uptake is very much temperature depe

Mid April Update
April is moving quickly as we head towards Opening Day. Our full season crew has returned and are busy putting the golf course back together. We have pulled all our tarps and have been rolling the greens to firm them up and have gotten a mow in. For the most part the turf is in good condition. We have a couple of areas on a few that are a little thin; the poa annua took a bit of a hit in some select spots. We took a couple samples into the shop and have seen the turf grow out

April Update
The calendar tells us that spring has arrived. Conditions seem to say otherwise! Cool and wet weather has been the theme for the past couple of weeks, making getting onto the course for work has been delayed. The long range forecast has improved weather into the latter part of next week with dryer and warmer. We are hoping for the turf to dry so we can start taking equipment and some growth to start taking place to start planning the first cut of the greens. So far, what we

March Update
March has arrived and we are eager to see some turf. We have been under constant snow cover for close to 50 days now. The guys completed an expedition looking at snow depths and ice levels trying to get a sense to the health of the greens about 10 days ago. On average, about a foot of snow is on the ground. In some low lying areas depths were a little higher. A very thin ice layer were seen in select areas. Nothing very extensive, or thick. Still fairly optimistic, though I h

Winter Update
2026 is underway and we are well into our winter mode. As usual, a lot of my attention is given to the weather forecast. Not only for snow removal plans, but to see how it may affect the turf on the golf course. We began the calendar year with cold temperatures and little to no snow cover. We did have some ice on a few greens at this time. 6 Green under a couple inches of ice. Taken January 8th The next two weeks things warmed up and saw several rain events. The frozen turf t

AGM Report - Greens Committee
The mandate of the Greens Committee is to advise and assist the Board of Directors on all matters related to the golf course grounds, ensuring the course is maintained and enhanced for the benefit of its members. Throughout the golf season, the Committee meets monthly, with additional meetings in the off-season, to review course conditions, identify areas for improvement, address member feedback, and guide long-term planning. This year’s most pressing challenge was drought an

Winter Update
After over 38,000 rounds and a summer and fall where drought dominated the conversation, the 2025 golf season at Oakfield wrapped up about a month ago. By all accounts a very successful season was had. The season began with the completion of Phase 2 of Ian Andrew's Master Plan. Turf Masters did excellent work constructing new fairway bunkers on 1 and 9 and greenside bunkers on 9 and 18. They also removed the fairway bunkers on 17. All of this work has resulted in improvements

Fall Update
The dry weather that has continued into fall has finally let up. 35mm over the past 3 days has noticeably given the turf a boost. Although temperatures and the length of our days has reduced drought stress compared to the summer, until this week we were still irrigating at a rate that was much higher than our typical autumn needs. After just over 100mm in about a 10 week stretch through August 31st, September only yielded 37mm and none in October until the 8th. 137mm in 15 w
